This painting was inspired by a desert landscape where ancient pictographs can be found. Encountering these traces prompted me to reflect on the enduring human impulse, across cultures and history, to create images as forms of expression and communication.
Ancient Present explores the relationship between past and present through pictorial language. In the distance, a purple mountain is reduced to a simplified form, evoking the directness of ancient pictographs. Toward the foreground, forms acquire greater detail, light, and shadow, creating a passage from the distant past to the present. A fallen living tree behind the Joshua tree introduces another temporal layer, suggesting the persistence of the past within the present.
The pictograph informs both visual language and process. I painted the Joshua tree trunk using my fingers, referencing the physical gestures of ancient mark-making. Drawing on the pictograph as storytelling, elements appear suspended rather than grounded, suggesting a landscape being communicated rather than observed. Ancient Present reflects on the enduring human impulse to observe, create, and communicate across time.
